Early Stage 1
Activities focus on:-
Sound awareness
Talking, Writing
Craft, Language
Listening
Reading
A weekly schedule is provided for easy recording and programming of activities for the week's work. Each aspect is related to the others in as many ways as is possible. eg. Week 5:-
Sound Awareness
The sound is [p] which is a sound produced by "popping" air from the lips. The children play games such as cotton-wool ball races where they blow the "balls" on the desk, feeling the air coming from their lips.
The children listen for the sound [p] when identifying the initial sound in a word.
Talking
The children learn to say a short rhyme in which most words begin with the sound [p]. Patty wanted popcorn, She put it in the pan, Listen to the popcorn, Go pop-pop-pop!
Writing
The children feel their lips together (forming a straight line) when beginning to say the sound. So, the children learn to write the line first when writing the letter [p] (going top-to-bottom).
Craft
The craft activity is cooking popcorn, where the children jump around the room while it is cooking pretending to be popcorn and making the "popping" noise, [p]-[p]-[p].
Language
The children develop an understanding of the concept "beside" in a 3-dimensional and 2-dimensional environment in a hands-on learning environment. (ie. 3D = objects beside objects, 2D = line beside pictures on page, with emphasis on top-to-bottom) The children complete a sequencing exercise where pictures beside each other tell a story.
Listening
Listening to a rhyme for words containing the sound [p] and responding by making the "popcorn' noise. Following verbal instructions to draw a line beside named pictures (going top-to-bottom).
Reading
Reading activity involving identification of odd picture in a row (facing different way). Reading sheet for reading practice ... the (picture) and the (picture), where the pictures begin with the sound [p], the words 'and' and 'the' being sight words.
